Coal

Coal burning fire spat out pieces of wood left underneath

Father kneels with large knitted jumper poking it with a fire stick

Ruffling hands above

My brother and I complain about the cold

And father says to go get more coal

Crackling and popping flames

Glide in slow motion towards the chimney breast

And the smell is intoxicating in a good way

As it sets reminders that winter is close by

If not already here

And most children love winter.
